That is what I am learning right now.

I am diving into Exodus, Isaiah and John's gospel. There is a whole lot of glory.

Observation number 1 is that God's glory is public.

When God's glory comes to town every one knows about it. In Exodus, earthquakes, lightning, fire and thick clouds all represent God's glory. They are not the sort of thing you ignore. Indeed, they cannot be ignored.

In Isaiah, God's glory is not seen in quite the same way. But when Isaiah catches a glimpse in the temple... not only do the cherubim cry out holy, they also cry out that 'the whole earth is full of his glory'. Again, God's glory is public.

In John, God's glory is seen in Jesus' signs/miracles (similar to Exodus' signs and wonders). What is surprising is that the while these signs manifest glory in amazing power, the real high point of glory is Jesus' crucifixion, a moment of weakness. However, it is still public as Jesus says 'But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself'.

Observation number 1. God's glory is public.

Christian Ethics for teenagers... a book in the making

I imagine most people would have on their bucket list to write a book. It has been on my list for a while but I never known what it would be on. Recently I have made a decision.

I would like to write a book that provides a theological basis for Christian Ethics and I want it to be written in such a way that it is appealing and understandable for a teenager.

I think a book like this would be valuable for a couple of reasons:

1. We need to move beyond an ethic that says 'because the bible tells me so.' This is true and my book would say the same thing but often what they are really say is: 'because the bible commands it'. The things is... the bible offers way more than commands.

2. I have read research that suggest that teenagers are faced with more choices than ever before. Take for example, social media. This is a 'new' world and a world where many of us are coming to live. It is a world where in some ways you exist outside your body... could we begin to see the beginnings of virtual churches (it may already be happening!). This is just one aspect of social media that needs thinking about. We need to be thinking ethically as we come to live in this new world.

3. Teenagers have less guidance than ever before. We are living in a so called 'post church' society with a less defined family unit which can leave the teenager with few models models and little ethical instruction. Teenagers are looking for a framework for their lives. Christian ethics can give them this and more importantly can give them Jesus!

Anyway... there is my book.

History of Youth Ministry in Sydney (Part 2)

Following Begbie, the next direction in loving the youth of Sydney was the appointment of G Delbridge in 1942. He was the first Chaplain for Youth. His roles included vocational advice, missions for youth, coaching youth with college applications and increasing the number of CEBS branches. He was a busy man.

His roles are not what we would expect from a youth minister today. However, one writer commented there is 'little doubt that Delbridge would have argued what he was doing, in addition to overt evangelization, flowed out of the Gospel he proclaimed.'

His love for the youth of Sydney meant he did not just outline a few propositions of what the gospel was all about but rather springing from the gospel he was involved in their lives. He preached and embodied the gospel.

The lesson for us today... we must not only preach Jesus... we need to live Jesus, as those who went before us have done.

New Fleet Foxes

Check it out...

http://stereogum.com/664551/fleet-foxes-battery-kinzie/mp3s/

Rebecca Black - Friday

I just read a blog that referred to this song as being 'hilariously awful'. For the last 2 years I have not been able to break my PB for 10kms. So my question to runners is 'how do I get faster?' Here are the top four tips:

1. Speed training. This can take many forms. The most common is running a couple of 400s with breaks in between each one. Aim to run at about 80%. Start your first session small (maybe 3x400s) and gradually build up. Apparently, you reach your peak speed after 10 weeks of this training... after 10 weeks take some time off otherwise you will see your next PB drift off into the distance.

2. Go long once a week. I was told if you're wanting a quick 10k time try and go long (20km) once a week.

3. Use shorter steps. It does not sound right to me but apparently the shorter your steps the faster you will go.

4. Do some hill training. Find a hill and run up and down it a few times. Again, gradually build up the number of reps as you get stronger.

To reach that PB there is an order to follow... first go long (10 wks), then do some hills (10 wks) and finally get your speed training on (10wks). Too easy (not!)

I am currently in phase one trying to go long at least once a week... If you want to go long with me... 6am Saturday.

A History of Youth Ministry in Sydney (Part 1)

Across Sydney today there are a number of healthy youth ministries. Groups that are going hard proclaiming Jesus in culturally relevant ways. Each one of these have people from the past to thank and to learn from.

To some extent there has always been ministry to children and youth. Moses urged the parents who stood on the edge of the promised land to impress on their children the commands he had given them. (Deut 6:7)

But the question I have is when and why did specialised youth ministry begin?

Within the Sydney Diocese Archbishop Mowll helped get things started. As early as 1927 he appointed Begbie to be the 'Diocesan Evangelist'. This role ended up being more a mission to the youth of Sydney. Begbie appears to have been a man of energy and full of passion to see the youth of Sydney come to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. He conducted no less than 56 missions focused upon teenagers.

Youth ministry evolved out of a desire to see the lost saved. A beautiful starting point. A beginning that we should not forget but rather reflect upon. A beginning that will hopefully draws us to our knees in prayer and be extra motivation in seeking to save the lost in our youth ministries.

Moser's on Changing the World

'As I reflect on youth ministry, I am absolutely convinced that ministry to young people is about grabbing hold of this world with the gospel of Christ, shaking it alive and placing it on the road towards eternal life. Two things:

1. Colossians 1 reminds us that being a Christian is about being brought from darkness to light. Have you ever thought that this light is, at least in part, God's glory. It shines so brightly and brilliantly that we can no longer hide in darkness. God's glory enlightens, warms and draws us in.

2. In John's gospel glory takes on a trinitarian dimension. The Father glorifies the Son (17:1), the Son glorifies the Father and the Spirit glorifies the Son (16:14). We are caught up in this. We are caught up in a glory fest. This is made clear as Jesus prays that he is glorified in us (17:10).

Shocking idolatry?

In Jeremiah 2 the heavens are to be shocked at the people's idolatry. As I read this, for what felt like the first time, I realised that I am not shocked at idolatry. I wondered why that is... here are a few possible reasons.

1. I don't know what idolatry is? I have been given definitions. It has something to do with worshipping created things rather than the Creator God. The problem is idolatry seems to be more subtle than that. I don't realise or know when I am actually 'bowing down' to an idol.

2. I don't have a big enough grasp on what God's glory is and so I don't know what I am giving up. In Jeremiah 2, it is made clear that idolatry is an exchange of God's glory for nothing. This is what leads to the heavens being shocked.

3. I have a broken heart. Idolatry is more than an action or a priority. It stems from a broken heart. My heart has been repaired (actually, replaced) but it is still a source of deceit and warps my perception and desires.

4. I feel like I have an excuse. I almost echo the words of the people described in Jeremiah, 'It is hopeless for I love foreign gods and after them I will go'. The world, the flesh and the devil become my scapegoats. Idolatry is their problem, not mine.

That is four, I am sure there are many more...

Sufjan Stevens @ Opera House 28.1.11

I walked out of the opera house last night and I was speechless and still today I am speechless. My friend, Camel, was visibly trembling and another friend could only awkwardly scream in excitement. It was quite a night.

I was told a man with a violin and some looping skills was opening the show. His name was Owen Pallet. I was not expecting a lot but as soon as he set his first loop and sung his first note the whole audience seemed entranced and silence fell upon the auditorium. His voice was strong and his creativity astonishing. His music reminded me of Jonsi. He certainly warmed up the room.

After a short intermission, Sufjan's band entered the dark concert hall. Only a glimpse of white constumes and faint glow sticks could be seen as they trooped in. But when the first note was sung by the Sufjan and the backing vocals came to life, the lights flashed and the whole band was seen in its neon splendour. Sufjan appeared to be wearing a bodysuit of fluorescent lights. All Delighted People filled the room for 10-15 glorious minutes and many delighted people raised their hands as a wall of sound, a fusion of lights and beamed videos blasted their senses.

Within seconds it was obvious we were in for something special, something extravagant, something beyond words. All expectations needed to be adjusted as it became obvious that Sufjan's folk stylings were not going to be getting a lot of space. Rather it would be his experimental electronica from 'Age of Adz' that would be showcased. As the show progressed, he revealed that this album was influenced by his obsession with the Bible, space and meteorology (and as a side note mentioned that Get Real, Get Right was a nice summary of all his and Royal's thoughts). It was a surprising mix with surprising results.

The sound boomed for a good portion of the night but also descended into silent moments where all the audience were sitting on edge of their chairs as if even the rustle of their clothes might destroy the atmosphere. Futile Devices was one of these silent moments. It was beautiful, a song filled with space and meaningful lyrics.

This quieter song led towards a bombastic closer, Impossible Soul. It was described by Sufjan as the 'motherload' and the motherload it was. He believes that 'more is more' and I am inclined to agree. Never before have I experienced a 25 minute song (a TV episode) played at a show. What was even more surprising was the audience was captivated for the whole time and that as it drew to its close, with balloons falling from the ceiling, the whole opera house was on their feet dancing. The repeated lyrics still echo in my ears 'we can do much more together, It's not so impossible.' It was similar to the time Ben Harper finished with the line 'you can change the world with your own two hands'. In both instances it felt as if the fans left with a funny sort of empowerment...

The cheer that followed must have ruptured at least one or two eardrums. Sufjan returned to the stage to appease some possibly disappointed fans with some pop songs from his 'Welcome to Illinois' album. He concluded with Chicago. It was fitting. The song that burst him into the music scene five years ago now burst into life reminding this fan what brought him to Sufjan in the first place and whats more what brought him to the best gig he has ever attended.

Set List for 28.1.11

All Delighted People
Too Much
Age of Adz
Heirloom
I Walked
All For Myself
Vesuvius
The Owl and the Tanager
Get Real Get Right
Futile Devices
Impossible Soul

Encore:
Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
Chicago

Praying for Creativity

A lecturer last year encouraged our class to 'expand our moral imagination'. It is an expression that has found a home in my mind because so often I find my 'moral imagination' far too limited.

For example, when I see a person in need by the side of the road my limited moral imagination says 'hey, drop some coin in his hat or offer him some food'. It is the path that is most often travelled and it is a good path.

But if I expanded my moral imagination maybe... I could take the person to a movie and provide some company or roll into the nearest clothes shop and offer him new shirt. It is the same good path but I would be taking a slightly different turn.

So this year I am praying for myself and for my church (St Philips, York St) that we would get creative and have our moral imaginations expanded.

Not just in how we help those in need within our city, but in how we work, play and create.

FREE live music recordings that will blow your mind

My friend, the Camel, put me onto a very very sweet link last night. Always being looked over or looked through. Have you ever felt invisible? Insignificant?

Feeling invisible has the power to render a person useless. Pushing a person to hide in a corner because this feels like their right home. Their hands and mouths not only feel invisible but become invisible and so they are no longer able to serve or love to their fullness.

Invisible.

In Genesis 16 the way one looks and is seen is paramount.

Hagar wishes upon herself invisibility as her mistress, Sarai, looks on her with contempt (v4). A contempt that is fuelled by jealously as Hagar has conceived a child with Sarai's husband, Abram. Sarai then alters Abram's perception of Hagar telling him a lie. Telling him that Hagar looked on her with contempt. With the lie firmly planted, Sarai deals harshly with Hagar and she flees. Seeking a cloak of invisibility.

But she can not hide. An angel of the Lord finds her by a spring (which is the same word for 'eye' in Hebrew - is this an allusion to the idea of 'looking'?)

Her invisibility is now cast to the side.

God sees her...

  in her invisibility...

He grants her a promise that surprisingly seems to equal the promise given to Abram (15:5)... 'I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.'

She is no longer looked on with contempt... but is looked on with grace and love.

She is seen and so can say 'You are the God of seeing'...

... and knowing that she is seen....she can see and says 'Truly I have seen him who looks after me.'

Her invisibility fades. She is seen. Not looked over or through. Her hands and mouth become visible again and she walks back to Abram and bears him a son (16:15).

Might our invisibility be cast firmly away as we turn our eyes to God, the one who sees us, even as sinners.

Surfing Forster

The above is a photo I took while I was a way at Forster last week... Their harmonies were a delight. Their rockier moments got the foot tapping and the head nodding. They finished with their well-known 'Blood' and this echoed in the ears as the sold out crowd waited for the National to enter.

The National came out with a roar from the crowd. Immediately it was obvious that quite a following has grown in Australia. As the night powered on this was proven true over and over again as my body shook from the pleasure-filled screams of the crowd.

The set started well and really took of when 'Slow Show' was played. This was followed by 'Squalor Victoria'. The energy pumping through the room felt almost tangible at this point as the fans screamed along with Matt, raising invisible glasses to the heavens. This enthusiasm displayed by the crowd was maintained right to the end of 22 song set. Other highlights included, Abel, Fake Empire, Available and Mr November. It was also a joy to have a horn section that lifted the songs to the next level as they unleashed their power. Not to mention, a lead singer who feared nothing and entered a sweating crowd singing and screaming 'Mr November' (much to the apparent distress to the crew).

The show finished with an acoustic (no plugs, no mics) of 'Vanderlye, Cry Baby Cry'. It was a beautiful moment as the fans sung along with all the conviction of Matt, confirming that The National has found a place in the hearts and minds of Sydney.

Runaway
Anyone's Ghost
Brainy
Slow Show
Squalor Victoria
Afraid Of Everyone
Bloodbuzz Ohio
Little Faith
All The Wine
Available
Cardinal Song
Conversation 16
Sorrow
Abel
Apartment Story
Daughters of the Soho Riots
England
Fake Empire

Encore:
Lucky You
Mr. November
Terrible Love

Acoustic:
Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks

The drum media's top 10 from across the nation

1. Too heavy).

I already like The National's and the Foal's album. They are solid. Although I do think The National's earlier releases are better.

I have be scouring the internet for other albums that feature regular in top tens. It seems that Kanye's 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' is well up there. Some calling the best hip hop album ever produced! Janelle Monroe (sp?) has also got a mention, it seems she has produced a solid pop album that does not make critics cringe.

It is a good time of year to discover new music as you learn from others what they loved from 2010. I am hoping to find some gold.

Chester's wisdom on identity

"We're wired by God to love him and others: to find ourselves in losing ourselves."

Calvin quote from day 1 of reading

'But love will best judge what may hurt or edify; Generation y apparently begins with those born after 1986. It was a good little book. It was based on research done in England. First half was sociology and the second half theology. Here are five things that I found interesting.

1. This generation is more un-churched than previous generations and so lacks a Christian story. However, they are not as adverse to church as previous generations.

2. This generation values authenticity. Their ethics can often be based on what 'feels right' and what is 'true for me'. This feels a little shaky for many and so are looking for some guidance in life.

3. Classic Jack. Very chilled, yet sombre. He opens

"All at once

The world can overwhelm me

There is almost nothing that you could tell me

That could ease my mind"

The song continues with this anxious tone. Like a flood worry and insecurity pours over him. He worries about the lack of control, he worries about not being strong enough and he worries there is nothing left to hold onto. Not even the heart is safe for jack. The only hope he clutches for is a "hope between the dreams".

I am doing a talk tomorrow called "Finding Security". For the apostle Peter, even amongst enormous suffering his mind is eased. He looks beyond hope in dreams to a hope that will never perish, spoil or fade. It is a solid hope taking away insecurity all at once.

The loss of childhood (or adulthood)

It is often commented that children are growing up too quickly. It is a folk album. Very comparable to Dylan. A jingle jangle guitar and rough vocals. The beauty of this genre of music is the lyrics are clear and understandable. Stories are told and you get taken along for the ride.

In many ways, as you can guess from the album title, this is a sombre affair. Death is a recurring theme. The artist sings that 'when he comes to slumber his body will not be found' and that his body is simply fertiliser for the flowers. There is a sense of finality and meaningless in the grave. Not just in the grave, but it seems everything is painted with a shade of grade: He sings

I found the darkness in my neighbor
I found the fire in the frost
I found the season once claimed healthy
Oh, I need the guidance of the lost

In contrast to this album playing in the background, I have been spending a lot of time thinking about Isaiah 26:19:

    But your dead will live;
their bodies will rise.
You who dwell in the dust,
wake up and shout for joy.
Your dew is like the dew of the morning;
the earth will give birth to her dead.

Two different songs with two very different messages. The hopeful and the hopeless.

Battles @ opera house

I saw Battles at the opera house last night. Some patriarchal father can not make that decision for me as Tori - they can't. Nobody gets here without a woman being in all her glory - it just doesn't happen. That kind of behaviour was deemed sinful because that's how the patriarchs were able to control the idea that women could create with their bodies. It's such a powerful thing to bring life in to this world and onto the planet. The idea was that men wanted to control procreation, and so they created sinful behaviour to be able to divide women from between their spirituality and their sexuality.'

Tori has just released an album titled 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin'.

I have nothing to add just a whole lot of questions. He is the man who can watch couples interact for 15 minutes and then with about 90 percent accuracy predict whether they will be divorced in six years. An article was published in SMH on the weekend. Crazy stuff.

He found a strong predictor of a happy marriage is the husband’s willingness to compromise in marital disputes and accept his wife’s influence. I wonder if you can call that humility?

He reckons the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse that predict an ailing marriage are criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling and contempt. And worst of these is contempt.

Wise words. There is obviously a lot more to consider as to what is needed for a good relationship but these warning signs seem worthwhile in heeding. We love it but it simply tingles our ‘ear buds’ and that is all.

For the avid musician, the answer, I imagine would be obvious. It often IS their identity and so to ask this might border on being offensive.

For me, a keen listener. It is more than cheesecake but how much more I am not sure.

‘I am wide awake it is morning now’ by Bright Eyes was influential for me.

It gave me someone to sympathize with. He was also 23 and felt like the world was spinning too fast and his shoulder were not strong enough to bear the load.

I was influenced. Unfortunately, it was negatively. He provided no comfort to this problem, and so I was left feeling hope-less. I think most music leaves us like this.

What do you think? Is music simply cheesecake?

Happy Mother's Day

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WeI_exnL9ek/SgVw0G0K6pI/AAAAAAAAACw/q5mKHwaxvGU/s320/christmas+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333793374175160978" />
It is my Mum's birthday today. I am throwing a little dedication to her. 'Brave' by Nicole Norderman. And for those who like to rock 'God Bless Mom' by the Frames.

Would you rather listen to a panda bear or Panda Bear?

There is some music which is like a classy romantic comedy. It is quick, easy and entertaining. Think Snow Patrol (don't get me wrong I like this stuff)

There is other music which is more like an epic, like Lord of the Rings. It takes time. It builds a story and reaches a climax. Think the Mars Volta.

Then there is music which is Lord of the Rings on drugs. Enter Panda Bear. Epic craziness.

I have been listening to their album 'Person Pitch' this week and am quite addicted. There 11 and 12 minutes suck you for a musical adventure. I have included (on the side, please let me if the music player does not work) 'Good Girl/Carrots' for your enjoyment. It has more twists and turns than 'the Usual Suspects'.

Wear some headphones and get taken away into the weird and wacky world of Panda Bear. And they sing about being down here. They sing about the reality of life being toilsome. But they also sing of great hope.

Listening to them, as I walked in chilly wind, I was warmed by the encouragement of brothers who long for Jesus' return. I recommend a listen.

I have included some songs I found on playlist.com. Unfortunately, they are not the songs from the album I was listening to...so apologies if they don't get your foot tapping and your heart pumping.

Welcome

Our first self take

This week the Foxcroft family welcomed Luka Graham Foxcroft into the world. He is a legend.

There is no real story behind the name Luka. But in the back of my mind was the fact that there is a musician whose name is Luka Bloom. To celebrate Luka's birth I bought his platinum collection album. He is an Irish singer-songwriter. Like, many other Irish artists, his lyrics are sincere and his music is simple. It has no harsh edges and is perfect for putting the little guy to sleep.

I pray that Luka will take after Luka in being a sincere and honest young boy.

Later.

Killer Compilation

I heard about this one on triple J and then got a text message from a music guru recommending it. That sold me.

I am not usually into compilation albums. I like getting to know one artist well, enjoying an album and the way it comes together. This one is different and might I add... Excellent.

'Dark was the night' is the compilation made for the indie fan. It is benefiting an organisation known as the 'Red Hot Organisation'. This group aims to raise awareness and funds for HIV and AIDS. It was put together by some of the guys from The National.

I am still amazed by the artists they pulled together on one CD. Feist, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, The National, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine and My Brightest Diamond - to name a few. These are some of most talked about bands and are worth a listen. This album is a great taster for all things indie.

Check out its myspace page.

To appreciate the album it may need a few listens. A stand out for me (so far) is Sleepless by The Decemberists. It is a sad song. A song about a hollow life and death where there is no hope. The chorus is:

but this cup of wine
all salt and brines make me sleepy
a sorrow so
a field of tears that will never yield a single penny
but i don't know
i've got nothing to hold on to
i've got nothing to hold on to

A world without hope is a world that many people live in today. And what some do hope in, palaces and pennies, fade and can not be held onto.

In contrast, Peter writes

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you,
who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)

This is something that we can hold onto. Praise Him.

Aussie Aussie Aussie

A friend mentioned to me today that he created his top 10 of live gigs. On his list was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at Festival Hall. It was special to him because it was one of his first gig.

This reminded me of my first gigs.

Jebediah in around 1998 at the Metro. It was special. Once you get a taste of live music it is hard to leave it behind. The next gig I can remember is Bodyjar supported by Unwritten Law. It was rock and roll!

Gigs that followed... Alex Lloyd, John Butler Trio, Something for Kate (many times), The Hands, Whitlams, Silverchair, Regurgitator, LOA.

Today, as I reminisced on the bus journey home, I remembered the absolute quality of Australian music. There was a time in my life when I felt committed to only ever purchasing Aussie grown music. That time is past but still.... there is some great stuff out there.

What are the great aussie bands of today? Augie Mach and The Panics are the ones that have caught my attention in the last year or 2.

Is there anything else out there? Let me know.

As far as lyricists go.. it is hard to beat Something for Kate. This is who I chose to listen to on the way home. Starting by listening to 'Truly'. Never heard it? Youtube it... it is moving. Follow that up with 'You only hide'. Check it out.

So I keep watch
and you keep breaking
breaking formation to become
someone else
and your eyes become corridors
where I wander with a candle
calling out to you

and you only hide
because you know I'll find you

you say you just want to feel
the way you used to feel
the way you should feel
and I wander through
the lost city of you

I am taking this a little out of context but there are times when we revisit a song from the past or discover a new tune or, more inspiringly, read something afresh in the Word and we might feel as if we are wandering through... with a candle discovering something deep and beautiful.

Later.

Revive

It has been a while... it is a recurring theme in this blog.

I am stoked to let you know that Revive have been announced at one the 'Best Bets in 2009' by Billboard magazine! That is solid. They are the only Christian band to be mentioned. Pretty awesome. This is what the Cleveland Leader had to say:

'Billboard magazine Features Revive in its “Best Bets 2009” Cover Story this week: This week, Billboard magazine names Revive as one of 15 new “Faces To Watch” in 2009, as part of the Jan. 24 Best Bets cover story, on newsstands now. The high-energy, pop/rock band is the only Christian music artist selected, which highlights emerging talent in various genres of music. “Revive looks to be the next Aussie export to make its mark in the Christian music arena,” Billboard states. Revive’s debut album, Chorus of the Saints, releases March 10, just in time for a national tour with Third Day and Brandon Heath on the Revelation Tour. For tour dates, and more on Revive, please visit: www.reviveband.com.'

On another note... I saw Bon Iver last night at the City Recital Hall. Amazing. The atmosphere was crazy. The crowd screamed so hard in appreciation that my ear drums hurt. The album 'For Emma, Forever' is constantly getting mentioned by critics as being one of the best of 2008. I agree, even more fervently, now that I have seen him play live. I was struck by his intensity as a performer. It was hard not to get carried away by his music.

Without reading his lyrics at great depth... it seems that they are focused on loss and pain. The passion and emotion witnessed in performance, the strength at which the guitar is strummed and the drums are hit, makes it clear that this pain strikes deep. The mood in the audience of appreciation and agreement shows that this emotion is not felt by the Bon Iver band alone. It is a brokeness that we have all been stained by.

Fortunately, for those who have had their eyes opened, we come to a Saviour who gives words of comfort. Jesus said these words to his disciples just before they were to experience great loss, 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me'. Words which we also can hold onto today.

Later.

Music that is rockin my greek study

If you are doing some studying or just messing around on the net... put these tunes on in the background.. they will rock whatever world your in... even if it is greek!

Alicia Keys and Jack White team up --> The song is called 'Another Way to Die'. I am not promising eye opening insights or extreme revelations but a few comments to get us thinking on the culture of today.

Stephanie Mckay

This is a New York girl who is full of funk and soul. Listen and you will hear brass. Rad! There is a little bit of interest in her in Oz because she teamed up with Katalyst on his last album. This is a singer who is easy to listen and easy to like.

What does she say about our world. Given her latest album is called 'Tell it how it is', I think she has a whole lot to say.

Here is a sample of her lyrics from her song 'Oh Yeah':

I want to feel the sunshine, I want to take my own time
Live every moment with the wind in my hair
Dance to my own drum
Take a chance and have some fun
Oh yeah

The first verse laments the pain of working a 9-5 job and cries out for escape. The second verse sees the cure in 'maxing out her credit card' and buying a pair of shoes. This seems to be how she will 'feel the sunshine'.

It seems that our world is yearning for something better. Something better than the 9-5. Many are wanting to escape and and take control of their time and have fun. The solution for many is to consume - either toys or entertainment. I suppose the problem is that responsibility will hunt them down and the fun will end - the first verse of lament will remain.

Have a listen. Let me know your thoughts.

A good podcast

I took this photo on the weekend... thought I would include because I like it

I have mentioned before how you can download free music from triple j. It is 'Watch Me Disappear' by Augie Mach. On first listen I did not think too much of it. But on my second listen it grew on me. It takes you on a rocking 5 minute and seven second journey! Download it here.

Augie Mach are a Western Australian band who released an excellent album 1 or 2 years ago. They are about to follow it up.

Subscribe to the podcast (search for it in the itunes store) and have a listen... and then let me know what you think of the song.

mmm good..

Little Red last night at the Annandale were good... really good.

The night started well with Andy Bull. A local to Sydney. A man with a piano, a brass section, a bass player and drums. He brought the funk. A few sound glitches along the way but a great opening. He has a single out at the moment called 'Small Town'. Worth keeping your ears open for it.

The holidays were the next support. Not much to say about them. They had an Artic Monkey's feel to them.

Little Red were sensational. Easily gig of the year. The band had so much fun on stage and so it was hard not to enjoy it with them. The drummer was a crack up... huge cheesy smile for the whole night. They also mixed up their vocalists... the first three songs - three different singers. Highly recommend you catching them next time they are in your area.

Tomorrow night at the Annandale

Come to Little Red there will be thousands there

Little Red are playing at the Annanndale tomorrow night. They are from Melbourne and it will cost around $15. I am thinking of going. Is there anyone out there in blogland that might like to join me?

They are a band that are confessed 'harmony lovers' as disclosed on Triple J this morning. They are described on their myspace as 'The Original Doo Wop Punk'. A fairly accurate description.

Have a listen and think about going on an adventure tomorrow night.

On another note... I went to the Moore College Revue on Tuesday night. There was one lecturer that was the butt of almost all the jokes. Since Tuesday a song by Spoon called 'Don't make me a target' has been going around my head. I might suggest he sing it as the opening act for next year's revue. I could not find the song on the net but found some other Spoon which might also be of revelance to some who is picked on - 'The Underdog'.

Century Eyes

Shearwater

There is something I really like about this band.

My antennas went up when on emusic.com their latest album 'Rook' is one of the editor's picks.

Then last week I picked up the drum and the album was reviewed. The album was described as 'experimental folk rock' which was 'intricate, layered and intensely thoughtful'.

Finally, I realised they are an Okkervil River offshoot and I was sold.

It is a top album. Melburg's voice is haunting. The music is at times intense and urgent. The lyrics often dark and full of imagery.

Some lyrics from 'Century Eyes' raising the question of where we choose to stubbornly focus our eyes...

galloping into the void,
you are rolling your eyes like a horse,
all to turn form the beam,
from the eye of that screen.
"turn it off! turn it off!
with our backs to the arch
and the wreck of our kind,
we will stare straight ahead
for the rest of our lives!"

Have a listen

By the way... The front page had a 'myspace recommends'. It caught my interest...

Her name is Gin Wigmore. But it was not her name that hooked me in. It was the Sydney, Australia. Go the local.

Myspace compares her to Amy Winehouse and puts her in the 'folk rock/pop/alternative'.

Her voice was surprising. It is not a pretty, folky voice. It has more soul in it and drives the songs along. Have a listen to 'These Roses'. A piano, some kind of horn and her voice. It builds nicely. Look out for the 1 minute 50 second mark.

I am not sure I would buy the album but I would go watch her live. So when she does play around Sydney, I will be calling you up and trying to get you along.

Have a listen.

I want to be at Splendour

Splendour in the Grass is upon us.

It is a festival that I have always wanted to go to. The line up this year is not looking too bad at all. I would definitely be entertained. In order to feel like I am at least a part of it here is what I would go to if I had a ticket...

but for those who are not too interested - my hot pick is Sigur Ros. He has been getting some serious hype.

The Music - this will get you moving - not sure about their new stuff but the old stuff is good.

Gyroscope - not changing the world but there is a gap and I like their latest single

The Fratellis - surely they would be fun!

Cold War Kids - I highly rate this band. I would be very interested in hearing their new material and is there a better way to hear it other than live?

The Living End - probably the best Australian live act!

Band of Horses - A blog I read love this band - probably worth checking out!

Polyphonic Spree - a band that has been featured in scrubs, brings a file to the face and would kick some serious butt in the 'battle of the choirs'. Their sound is huge!

Sunday

Little Red - not sure where these guys are from but they have a beatle-ish sound to them.

British India - rock and roll

Laura Marling - she is good. Her album rocks. For someone so young, she is kicking some goals.

Vampire Weekend - they are doing something different and I am told they grow on you.

The wombats (although Katalyst would be tempting) - this will make you dance and if they are not doing the trick Katalyst will definitely get you moving

The Grates for a little bit - they are like popcorn cooking - super excitable and the live reviews have only ever been good

Lyrics Born - a legend and he has some new stuff to play

The Vines for a bit - why not?

The Panics - From WA, one of the best aussie bands going round at the moment - 'don't fight it' go and see them

Sigur Ros - I would go just to see them. They will transport you to a new world where you don't need english (they sing in some other language). Just released an album. They are the kings of building the music to a magnificent climax. Top pick

Presets- they might be a little dark for me but I might drop by to see what all the hype is about.

Wolfmother - Is their next album going to back up their first? Maybe they will play some new and give us a hint!

There you have it. If you are going - enjoy! Look forward to hearing what it was like.

Sunday

We have music streaming....

Check this out I have learnt how to stream music. I have added a song below but I am also experimenting with adding a playlist of all the artists I have reviewed in the sidebar. It is not streaming all that well on my computer so if it is annoying you just hit pause and check out the song below.

If you like it. Go and watch the movie 'Once'. The guy singing is Glen Hansard. He is the lead singer from an Irish band called The Frames. I have loved the frames for a long time. There is a realness in their lyrics that I love. The emotion is raw. The frames is really driven by Glen. He is a real character. I think that what makes the movie, 'Once' so loveable.

I hope you enjoy the song and I also hope you watch the movie. It will reward you!

The movie is like a prolonged but glorious music film clip.

It has been a while...

Fleet Foxes

If you are a jjj listener you may have already heard of these guys. It is the current feature album. It is good stuff. Great harmonies and a full sound.

A lot of the music blogs I check out have had half year reviews. Letting the readers know what the top albums of the year have been so far. Fleet foxes often gets a mention. It is definitely worthy of a listen.

Speaking of top albums for the first half of the year ... What has been your top album of the year so far?

I am keen to hear. I am feeling that Coldplay's new album is likely to get a mention.

My favourite... How cool is that?

The front man from Port O'brien spends part of his year working on a fishing boat in Alaska. The other part of his year he writes music. Good music!

It is obvious that this music is influenced by his time in Alaska. This theme runs through out the short album - 'All we could do was sing'.

There is no doubt if you log into their myspace page and hear the first song 'I woke up today' you will be given an automatic uplift. It is short song packed with energy. My favourite song (unfortunately not listed on myspace) is 'Fisherman's son'. It causes you to reflect on how you have ended up where you have ended up. For the singer he wanders whether he is in Alaska as a result of his heritage.

It is interesting to stop.. think.. wonder.. how have you ended up where you are? Are you a fisherman's son?

In some ways I am.

Hope you enjoy.

Do yourself a favour...

My first post was about a band called Bon Iver. Some people told me they liked what they heard. It is shaping up to be some of favourite music of this year.

I want to say to you now... do yourself a favour and click here. Check out some live (well-produced) videos of Bon Iver doing his thing. The site that is being linked to is a groovy little site. The guys that run it ask bands to perform for them in somewhat obscure places (this one is an apartment in what looks like France). I reckon the film work is good. There is also some other excellent bands (Jen Leksman, Okkervil River and REM)

I have only watched the first video so far ... there is study to be done... but it was quality. He has some mates with him and there is some solid harmony. There is also a good use of egg shaker and toy-like xylaphone.

The videos can be downloaded in ipod form. Could be some quality commute viewing.

Enjoy!

Laura Marling

If you are jjj listener then it is likely that you have already heard the sweet sounds of Reading singer songwriter, Laura Marling. She is born in the 90s - that's right the 90s! She is young.

However, her music and lyrics are not immature. As I have listened to her album, 'Alas I can not swim', I am drawn into thinking about the world she sings about. The world where old friends become ghosts, a world where people do not need saving because the reality of sin does not exist and a world where a heart will not allow anyone else in because it is already taken.

My favourites from the album are not included on the myspace page but have a listen and you will catch the vibe.

She is playing 'The Factory' on the 2nd of August. How do we love the people around us? What does it look like in the day to day? Is it in asking thoughtful questions? Affirming people? Giving hugs? Loud, cracking high fives?

This song popped into my head. It has a line that repeats in the chorus:

'Love her in the way she wants to be loved'

I think this is in some ways our answer. We need to think how people want to be loved, not how we want to love them.

Too often I assume that people like being loved the way that I do. If I want to love my friends and family better I reckon I might need to jump in their shoes and as Ryan sings 'love them in the way they want to be loved'.

So have a listen not only because Ryan is one of the greatest song writers of all time but also to spend some time thinking how you are going to love that special some one in the way they want!

http://www.last.fm/music/Ryan+Adams/_/Mockingbird

Interestingly, you might hear that Ryan does not think that loving like this is enough. I wonder why. TBone, do you have some answers....

Banjo, guitar and harmony

The Avett Brothers

As the name suggests this is a band made up of brothers, Seth Avett and Scott Avett. It is a guitar and banjo combo. Thrown into the mix is the magical harmony as they sing. Their music is honest. As I listen I find myself nodding my head, not just because it is a good tune but because I find myself agreeing with what they sing about.

One of the songs you can check out on their myspace site is called "The Weight of Lies". It reminds us that lies never leave us behind. They can not be run away from, 'they don't need an aeroplane to chase us down'. When we lie we like to think it as a one time event. We don't think of it affecting the future. Thinking even less of the fact that it will chase us down and when it does there will be no where to run. Have you ever experienced a time when a lie has chased you down? Have you felt the weight of the lie as it rushes to catch up on you? I wander if the Avett Brothers have.

Check it out

http://www.myspace.com/336231388

Free stuff

Yesterday this T shirt came as a gift to me in the post. It turns out that Anne wanted to surprise me with a little present. It feels like it was free! (even though it was paid for on our credit card)

So here is some free stuff for you...

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/listen/mp3s.htm

It has a preview for the new Living End album. It is pretty rock and roll and I believe it is essential Australian rock music listening.

There is also a song by Jamie Lidell which I believe the ladies will like. A very funky soul dancy number.

I have not really listened to the others... but I reckon without a listen I would back Bluejuice - they are old St Ives High boys.

Enjoy.

New beginnings...

This is a blog that aims at sharing music I am enjoying at the moment. Like all things, music is enjoyed more when you share it with others. So have a listen... make a comment... share the love...

The first song to share is...

Skinny Love by Bon Iver

This is from an album called 'For Emma, forever ago'. Apparently he wrote it in a little hut in the wild and its theme is his ex-girlfriend - Emma. I assume that 'skinny love' is about Emma. It seems that the love they had for each other grew thin. So thin that is was not able to be preserved. There is pain in unpreserved love, love that does not last. You can hear the frustration in Bon' voice and lyrics. It is something I think most people can relate to.

Fortunately, for some there is a love that lasts forever.

Have a listen...

  http://www.myspace.com/boniver

Agree or disagree with what the song is on about.
